A New Dawn For Dharmnath Mahto

Dharmnath Mahto, a 68-year-old farmer from Sarangpur, Bihar, dedicated his life to cultivating crops and caring for his cattle. For decades, his hands turned the soil and nurtured life, providing for his family with dignity and pride.

But as time passed, cataracts began to cloud his vision, turning the vibrant world he knew into a haze of shadows.

A Life Shrouded in Darkness

Unable to afford treatment due to poverty, Dharmnath’s livelihood slipped from his grasp. The fields that once flourished under his care lay neglected, and his cattle seemed out of reach.

I felt like a weight on my family’s shoulders. Not being able to see made me lose hope,

he recalls, his voice heavy with emotion.

Dharmnath was no longer able to perform even the simplest of tasks, and his family had to step in to help, something that weighed heavily on him.

A Glimmer of Hope

For two long years, Dharmnath lived in darkness, both literal and emotional, until Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital brought light to his village. A free eye screening camp arrived, identifying him as a candidate for cataract surgery.

The promise of a solution overwhelmed Dharmnath.

I couldn’t believe that help was finally here. It felt like a miracle,

he says, recalling the moment he learned that both the surgery and transportation to the hospital would be free of cost.

The hope he had almost lost began to spark again.

Restoring Vision, Reclaiming Life

At Akhand Jyoti’s surgical facility, Dharmnath underwent a successful cataract operation. The skilled medical team not only restored his vision but also his confidence. The man who once saw himself as a burden was now brimming with determination.

I can see again. I am no longer a burden,

he shares proudly.

Back on his farm, Dharmnath resumed his daily routine with newfound vigour.

He tended to his crops and cattle as if reclaiming pieces of himself that had been lost in the haze. He no longer needed assistance, which made him feel truly free again.

A Future Filled with Hope

Dharmnath’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of timely medical intervention. With his vision restored, his life is once again full of purpose and joy. He no longer feels like an observer in his family’s life but an active contributor.

I have my life back, and I’m grateful to those who made it possible,

Dharmnath expresses, his voice filled with gratitude.

The Light Akhand Jyoti Brings

Dharmnath’s story is more than just his own—it symbolises the countless lives Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital touches through its blindness elimination programme.

By restoring vision, the organisation restores hope, independence, and dignity to individuals like Dharmnath, ensuring a future filled with light for those living in the shadows of poverty and blindness.

His once dark world is now filled with bright opportunities ahead.

Donating = Restoring Hope

Over the last 19 years, each day we have poured tremendous time, effort and compassion in reaching out to indigent people who suffer from curable blindness. Our work has taken us to extreme places, among the less fortunate people. Our efforts to restore sight for these people have helped them regain hope and dignity.

Most of our work remains free for our patients and is made possible by patronage.

Each day our volunteers and team members come across many inspiring recitals of personal growth and tussle. These accounts help us to keep going on with our mission and sustain our impact.

You too can help to make an even larger impact.

If you find any joy or stimulation here, please support us by sharing your donations. If you have donated earlier, we convey our sincere thanks and look forward to your continued patronage.
