From Adversity To Empowerment

In the heart of rural Bihar, Kalyani Kumari's journey from hardship to empowerment is a story of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to changing the trajectory of her life and family’s future. At just 21 years old, Kalyani has faced more struggles than many twice her age.

Yet, her story is one of hope, courage, and the transformative power of education and opportunity, especially through Akhand Jyoti’s 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Education Programme.

A Childhood Shaped by Struggles

Kalyani’s childhood was anything but easy. Growing up in a financially struggling family, she saw her father work tirelessly to make ends meet. Despite his efforts, the burden of providing for the family was overwhelming, especially with an ill mother who required constant care.

Kalyani felt the weight of responsibility from a young age, knowing that her family’s well-being rested on her father’s shoulders.

My father worked so hard, but it never seemed enough,

Kalyani recalls.

I watched him struggle every day, and I knew I had to do something to change our situation.

What made matters worse was the patriarchal structure of society, which dictated that girls, like Kalyani’s elder sister, were married off at a young age.

Kalyani’s parents, unable to provide a proper education for their daughter, chose to marry off her sister as they believed it was the best way to secure her future. This decision, though common in their community, left a lasting impact on Kalyani, who refused to let her life follow the same path.

Seeing my sister married off so young made me realise that I couldn’t let that happen to me,

says Kalyani.

I wanted to break free and create a future for myself that was different.

A Bold Decision for Change

Determined not to face the same fate as her sister, Kalyani made a bold decision to join Akhand Jyoti’s 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Education Programme. The programme, which empowers young girls in rural Bihar with education and professional skills, became a turning point in Kalyani’s life.

She saw this as her opportunity to not only escape the limitations placed on girls in her community but also to support her family financially.

When I heard about the programme, I knew this was my chance, Kalyani says with conviction.

I didn’t want to be stuck in the same cycle. I wanted to study, work, and stand on my own feet.

Kalyani’s decision to pursue a Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) at Akhand Jyoti is driven by her ambition to secure a stable future for her family.

But it’s not just about academics for Kalyani. The 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Educationprogramme also provided her with the opportunity to play football and represent her state. This allowed Kalyani to build leadership skills, physical endurance, and a sense of teamwork—qualities that have strengthened her resolve to succeed.

Playing football has taught me more than just the game,

Kalyani explains.

It’s about teamwork, discipline, and leadership. I feel stronger, and I know I can face whatever challenges come my way.

A Strong, Independent Leader in the Making

Today, Kalyani is not just a student but a young woman on a mission. As she works towards completing her studies, she envisions a future where she is able to take on the financial responsibility of her family.

Kalyani has already shouldered the emotional responsibilities of caring for her ill mother and supporting her sister, and now, she is focused on becoming a strong, independent leader who can provide her family with the stability they deserve.

I’ve always taken care of my mother and sister, and once I start working, I will make sure they never have to struggle again. says Kalyani.

I want to ease my father's burdens and make him proud.

Her journey is a testament to the power of self-determination and the belief that education can break the cycle of poverty and gender bias.

Once Kalyani completes her studies, she plans to work at Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, where she can contribute to the organisation’s mission of eliminating curable blindness and empowering young girls like herself.

A Future of Promise

Kalyani’s story is one of empowerment, not just for herself but for her family. By taking charge of her education and future, she is setting an example for other young girls in her community who may feel trapped by their circumstances.

Her determination to succeed and create a better life for her family is inspiring, and her journey proves that with the right support and opportunities, any girl can break free from societal constraints and build a future of her own making.

Through the 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Education Programme, Kalyani has not only gained knowledge and skills but has also found a sense of purpose and empowerment that will guide her as she works towards achieving her dreams.

With a bright future ahead, Kalyani Kumari is proof that when given the opportunity, girls from rural communities can rise to become strong, independent leaders who change the world for the better.
