From Shadows To School Desks: Rimjhim’s Journey To Clarity And Hope

In a small, vibrant village nestled in rural Bihar, 15-year-old Rimjhim Kumari’s life mirrored the quiet resilience of her community.

She dreamed of academic success, envisioning herself as a proud achiever in her school’s 10th board exams. Yet, her vision—both metaphorical and literal—was shrouded in darkness.

Dreams Caught in Darkness

Rimjhim suffered from cataracts, a condition that blurred her world and stifled her aspirations.

I loved going to school and solving math problems,

           Rimjhim recalls.

But as my eyesight worsened, the letters and numbers seemed to vanish before me. I felt like I was failing, not because I wasn’t smart, but because I couldn’t see.

Her parents, struggling to make ends meet, felt the weight of helplessness. The cost of medical treatment seemed insurmountable.

We knew Rimjhim was talented. But we feared her future was slipping away because of something we couldn’t afford to fix.

          says her mother.

A Ray of Hope Amid Shadows

When Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital’s paediatric Bal Drishti initiative arrived in Rimjhim’s village, it was as though a long-awaited miracle had come to her doorstep.

Focused on Reaching the Unreached in low-income geographies, the programme conducted a free eye screening camp that identified Rimjhim’s condition.

The doctors assured Rimjhim and her family that her vision could be restored through a sight-restoring surgery.

When they told me I could see again, it was like someone gave me my dream back.

Rimjhim says with a hopeful smile.

The Gift of Sight

At Akhand Jyoti’s surgical hospital in Mastichak, Rimjhim underwent a life-changing surgery, completely free of cost. The moment my bandages were removed, she could see her mother’s face clearly.

It was the happiest moment of my life.

Rimjhim recounts, her voice trembling with emotion.

Her mother, overwhelmed with gratitude, shares:

For years, I prayed for a solution. Akhand Jyoti brought light into our lives. Now, Rimjhim has her sight, and we have our hope back.

Dreams Rekindled

With her vision restored, Rimjhim returned to school with unbridled enthusiasm.

I am studying harder than ever, I want to become a teacher and help other children, just like Akhand Jyoti helped me.

Rimjhim now spends her evenings poring over her books, preparing diligently for her board exams. She’s not just catching up with her peers but is determined to surpass them.

Her journey from despair to empowerment is a testament to the transformative power of sight.

Bal Drishti: A Visionary Mission

Rimjhim’s story reflects the essence of Akhand Jyoti’s Bal Drishti initiative, which aims to screen 500,000 children, conduct 4,000 free surgeries, and distribute 4,000 spectacles by 2030.

By focusing on Working Where it Really Matters, Akhand Jyoti continues to combat curable blindness in children across rural Bihar and beyond.

Donating = Restoring Hope

Over the last 19 years, each day we have poured tremendous time, effort and compassion in reaching out to indigent people who suffer from curable blindness. Our work has taken us to extreme places, among the less fortunate people. Our efforts to restore sight for these people have helped them regain hope and dignity.

Most of our work remains free for our patients and is made possible by patronage.

Each day our volunteers and team members come across many inspiring recitals of personal growth and tussle. These accounts help us to keep going on with our mission and sustain our impact.

You too can help to make an even larger impact.
