Munakiya's Journey To Regaining Vision

In the quaint village of Saidpur, Bihar, 54-year-old Munakiya Devi lived a simple yet fulfilling life as a modest farmer. Her days were spent toiling in the fields of others, contributing to her family's meager income. Despite the challenges of rural life, Munakiya found contentment in her daily routine and the close-knit bonds of her community.

A Farmer's Life in Shadows

This tranquil life was disrupted when cataracts began to cloud Munakiya’s vision. Over time, her eyesight deteriorated to the point where she became almost entirely dependent on her husband for the simplest of tasks—eating, bathing, and walking. The vibrant fields she once loved became shrouded in a haze of darkness.

I felt like a burden, Munakiya recalls, her voice tinged with pain.

I had accepted my fate in darkness, thinking that poverty would never allow me to see again.

Surgery seemed like an unattainable dream for her family, as their limited resources barely met their daily needs. Her helplessness grew with each passing day, and she began to believe that her life would remain in shadows forever.

A Glimmer of Hope

Just when despair began to take hold, hope emerged in the form of Akhand Jyoti. The organisation organised a free eye screening camp in her village, where healthcare professionals identified her bilateral cataracts.

When I learned that the surgery would be free, I felt a spark of hope,

Munakiya shares, her eyes lighting up at the memory.

The Akhand Jyoti team arranged free transportation to the base hospital, alleviating her worries about travel costs. Nervous yet hopeful, she embarked on the journey, supported by the caring staff who reassured her every step of the way.

The Road to Recovery

At the hospital, Munakiya was met by a dedicated team of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and nurses who guided her through the surgical process. Their compassion and professionalism made her feel at ease, transforming her anxiety into confidence.

The surgery was a success, and she could see clearly for the first time in months.

I felt like I had been reborn,

she exclaims, overwhelmed with gratitude.

Restoration of Independence

Today, Munakiya is back in the fields, her independence and dignity restored. The vibrant colours of nature that surround her are a testament to her renewed vision and spirit.

I can now care for myself and contribute to my family,

she proudly states, embodying resilience and strength.

With the support of Akhand Jyoti, Munakiya Devi's journey from darkness to light serves as a reminder of the power of hope and community in transforming lives.

I had accepted my fate in darkness, but the free surgery restored my sight and livelihood.
