Raushan Kumar's Journey From Darkness To Hope: Restoring Vision, Renewing Dreams

Raushan Kumar, a cheerful four-and-a-half-year-old from Bansghat Masuaria, Bihar, had a life filled with laughter, games, and boundless energy.

Like any child his age, he loved to play with his friends in the dusty lanes of his village.

From Play to Pain

However, one fateful day during a game, he sustained an eye injury. What seemed like a minor incident soon turned life-changing as cataracts developed in his injured eye.

Over time, Raushan's vision deteriorated, leaving him disconnected from the joys of childhood.

His friends' playful taunts turned into ridicule, isolating him further.

I stopped playing with my friends... they laughed at me,

Raushan recalls, his voice filled with quiet sadness.

The Struggles of Limited Resources

For Raushan's parents, life was already a daily battle against poverty. His father, the family's sole breadwinner, could barely meet their basic needs, let alone afford specialised medical care for his son.

Like many families in rural Bihar, they lived far from accessible paediatric eye care facilities.

It broke our hearts to see him like this, but we didn't know what to do,

Raushan's mother says, her voice heavy with the pain of helplessness.

Reaching the Unreached: A Ray of Hope

Amid their despair, a lifeline appeared through the Bal Drishti initiative by Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital.

This initiative, part of the organisation's Vision 2030 goals, aims to screen 5,00,000 children, perform 4,000 sight-restoring surgeries, and provide free spectacles to children in low-income geographies like rural Bihar over the next three years.

When a free eye screening camp visited their village, Raushan was identified and referred to Akhand Jyoti's surgical centre in Mastichak. Raushan underwent a free, successful cataract surgery.

A Brighter Tomorrow: Back to School and Play

The transformation was immediate and profound. Raushan's vision was restored, and with it, his life regained its light.

Today, he is back at school, chasing dreams as freely as he chases his friends during games.

I can see again, and now I play with my friends,

he shares, his eyes sparkling with renewed happiness.

His parents, who once lived in constant worry, now look toward a brighter future for their son.

Working Where It Really Matters

Stories like Raushan's reflect Akhand Jyoti's commitment to curable blindness elimination and its mission of working where it really matters.

By reaching the unreached in rural Bihar, the organisation is making life-changing impacts, one sight-restoring surgery at a time.

With initiatives like Bal Drishti, Akhand Jyoti is not just addressing medical needs but also restoring hope and dignity to children like Raushan, ensuring they grow up to lead fulfilling lives.

Raushan Kumar's journey from darkness to hope is a testament to how targeted interventions in low-income geographies can transform lives.

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital continues to shine as a beacon of hope for those battling the shadows of curable blindness.

Donating = Restoring Hope

Over the last 19 years, each day we have poured tremendous time, effort and compassion in reaching out to indigent people who suffer from curable blindness. Our work has taken us to extreme places, among the less fortunate people. Our efforts to restore sight for these people have helped them regain hope and dignity.

Most of our work remains free for our patients and is made possible by patronage.

Each day our volunteers and team members come across many inspiring recitals of personal growth and tussle. These accounts help us to keep going on with our mission and sustain our impact.

You too can help to make an even larger impact.

If you find any joy or stimulation here, please support us by sharing your donations. If you have donated earlier, we convey our sincere thanks and look forward to your continued patronage.
